Guadix
Guadix is to be found 60km from Granada,
200km from Murcia and 110km from Almeria. Located within Andalucia,
Guadix is one of the oldest settlements in Spain. Guadix has
a population of around 20,300 people and is the commercial
centre of the Accitana district. Much of the landscape has
a moonlike nature and is open wilderness.
The province is well connected by major
roads and the main town is worthy of a visit. The town has
always been a significant religious place and was the first
place in Spain to welcome Christianity en masse. The Alcazabar
was built in the 11th century and is the best example of Moorish
construction in the area. From the towers you can obtain a
panoramic view of the nearby Sierra Nevada with its snow-capped
peaks.
The cathedral was built between the
16th and 18th centuries and contains an important collection
of 47 canvasses dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Next
door is an important palace.
The area around the town offers the
Cuevas el Campo, strange and quite unique houses built into
the rock face. The houses are made from caves with superficial
concrete frontages being built on. The whole hillside is dotted
with them, some of them palacial inside. This is the largest
such community in Europe and houses 3000 people in some 2000
dwellings.
In Guadix you will find all manner of
local crafts from fine furniture to ironworks and fine pottery.
When it comes to fiestas, the town comes alive with more than
its fair share of holidays.
One of the biggest is on 16th and 17th
January when during the Romería de San Antón
when pilgrims set out to the hermitage then ride horseback
round the town, nine times. San Torcuato's Day is on 15th
May when mass is given by the Bishop and the remains of the
saint are paraded round the town.
The main carnival is the weekend before
Ash Wednesday and the summer fair takes place 31st August
to 5th September. This is then followed by Cascamorras on
the 9th September when the villain Cascamorras is run round
the town.
Easter week in Guadix is typical of Spain with major celebrations
all week.
Northeast of Guadix is Baza. Follow
the A92 highway.
