- three miles off the Cape of Santa Pola is the only inhabited island in the community
of Valencia, declared a Maritime Reserve in 1986. It can be visited throughout
the year by boat which takes about 20 minutes. In the 16th and 17th centuries
it was the outpost for pirates that raided the coastal communities and in the
18th century, King Carlos III ordered a settlement to be built to house 300 Italian
refugees. On the island, you must visit the 18th century fortress, the Baroque
style church, the old lighthouse and the St. Jose fortified tower .
